Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition that affects men aged 50 and over and is characterized by a noncancerous (benign) enlargement of the prostate that can make urination difficult.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
As we age, the production of androgens increases, especially testosterone, which reaches the prostate cells, where it is metabolized and induces cell growth. This increased proliferation leads to the formation of nodules and, therefore, to hyperplasia or hypertrophy.
Benign prostatic hypertrophy is frequently associated with reduced urine output which, stagnating in the bladder, favors the development of urinary tract infections, strongly linked to the onset of sexual dysfunction.
